From the April 28, 1997 Washington Post
Description:
Washington Gas Light continued to expand its core business and to restructure itself to be more competitive. In 1996 the company completed a process intended to streamline its management. The company also began competing for customers in its franchise area under a pilot program authorized by the Maryland Public Service Commission. Under that program 6,600 customers in Maryland were allowed to choose from among five competing companies, including Washington Gas, to be their supplier. Washington Gas retained about 15 percent of the customers. Washington Gas continued negotiations with the International Union of Gas Workers, which represents 1,000 company employees. In 1995 the company had locked out union workers for four months. Washington Gas also said it is preparing to market electricity in the Washington area in the face of a strategic challenge stemming from the pending merger of Baltimore Gas & Electric Co. and Potomac Electric Power Co.
