From the April 28, 1997 Washington Post
Description:
Named for its founder James W. Rouse, who died last year, Rouse made its mark building idealistic and family-centered projects, but the company took a new turn last year by shifting its focus to Las Vegas. In June Rouse completed its acquisition of Las Vegas-based Hughes Corp., which includes four large business parks, a three-quarters stake in a Las Vegas shopping mall and a massive new master-planned community outside Las Vegas called Summerlin, for $520 million. The company's vast land holdings originally were assembled by billionaire Howard R. Hughes Jr. In the Washington area, the company this year will celebrate the 30th anniversary of Columbia, Rouse's master-planned community. The company has announced a major make over of the 26-year-old mall there, which will include a new Nordstrom department store. Rouse also plans to build a luxury condominium project and an apartment complex on the mall's periphery. The company has proposed other large projects in Laurel, Bowie and elsewhere in Howard County. The company also announced some shifts at the top in February. Former chairman Mathias J. DeVito, 66, became chairman emeritus and Anthony W. Deering, 52, took the reins as chairman of the board and chief executive.
