Developments:
The CSX rail unit, CSX Transportation, is about to grow by as much as 5,000 miles in a merger with Philadelphia-based Conrail, the northeastern railroad created by Congress in 1976 from the lines of bankrupt eastern railroads. After a bitter battle with Norfolk Southern Corp., which attempted a hostile takeover of Conrail, CSX and Norfolk Southern will split Conrail.

The exact cost to CSX of the Conrail deal could approach $5 billion, which will put the railroad in a tight financial position, perhaps for several years.
