A Turkish man and woman cradle chicks rescued from the debris of their home near Izmit, a major industrial city in the epicenter of the quake. Turkey's largest oil refinery at Izmit was the scene of a raging fire, which officials feared could spread to nearby oil tanks and a large fertilizer plant.
