    1998-99 record: 35-34-13, 83 points, 3rd Pacific Division
Coach: Craig Hartsburg (35-34-13, one season with Ducks)
New faces: D Vitaly Vishnevski, LW Maxim Balmochnykh, D Oleg Tverdovsky, C Ted Donato
Losses: D Jamie Pushor, RW Tomas Sandstrom, C Travis Green, G Patrick Lalime
Strengths: LW Paul Kariya and RW Teemu Selanne form the best and most exciting 1-2 tandem in the NHL. When both score in the same game, the Ducks are 34-4-8 all-time. Those two helped Anaheim lead the league on the power play at 22 percent. D Fredrik Olausson is coming off an unexpected career season with 16 goals and 40 assists. The Ducks are hoping LW Maxim Balmochnykh, a 1997 second-round draft pick, can provide scoring depth that has been so elusive. Anaheim has an underrated but maturing defense that is bolstered by the return of Oleg Tverdovsky.
Weaknesses: The Ducks continue to look for anyone to take the scoring load off Kariya and Selanne. Gone are Sandstrom and Green, who combined for 28 goals last season. Donato is a speedy and versatile forward whose underachieving saw him make three stops in 1998-99. Despite the presence of its two high-priced superstars, Anaheim has won only one playoff series. And there's also the ownership uncertainty amid rumors the Walt Disney Company is negotiating to sell the team.
Hartsburg says: "We have to play with urgency, especially with the puck. We need to be smarter with the puck as well. Certain guys in this league can't afford a drop in their work ethic. They have to play hard all the time. If we can drop some of the selfish plays, we can succeed this year. We just have to keep doing it."
